Jeff Wilcox, Apple’s director of Mac system structure who oversaw a lot of the Apple Silicon transition, has left Apple to affix Intel. He’ll head up Intel’s efforts to develop its personal system-on-a-chip.
Wilcox makes this transfer after eight years as a key participant in Apple’s desktop and laptop computer product improvement. Earlier than that point, he was truly at Intel, so the transfer is a return for him, not a wholly new frontier.
He introduced the change on LinkedIn over the previous few weeks. In his preliminary LinkedIn publish, he wrote:
After a tremendous eight years I’ve determined to depart Apple and pursue one other alternative. It has been an unbelievable journey and I couldn’t be prouder of all we achieved throughout my time there, culminating within the Apple Silicon transition with the M1, M1 Professional and M1 Max SOCs and programs. I’ll dearly miss all of my Apple colleagues and pals, however I’m trying ahead to the following journey which is able to begin on the first of the yr. Extra to return!
After which a few weeks later, he wrote in a brand new publish:
I am happy to share that I’ve began a brand new place as Intel Fellow, Design Engineering Group CTO, Shopper SoC Structure at Intel Company. I couldn’t be extra thrilled to be again working with the wonderful groups there to assist create groundbreaking SOCs. Nice issues are forward!
The transfer is sort of latest; Wilcox began at Intel at first of this month.
The change is related to the broader story of Apple’s improvement of exceptionally environment friendly chips and Intel’s struggles to maintain up. Intel is engaged on new silicon that it hopes and claims will rival Apple’s latest breakthroughs. Wilcox could also be a key chief in these efforts transferring ahead.
